Let’s Break Some Eggs!

History

Space Egg Ships was born with a weird idea in mind: What if we put cards instead of sticks and buttons on an arcade cabinet?

“I was reading a fantastic book called “Uncertainty in Games” by Greg Costikyan and I thought that the randomness that a card’s deck could bring to a classic shmup may make a handmade level heavily replayable.” Says Jordi, Game Designer at Dabadu Games and Co-Founder.

We had just launched “It’s Full of Sparks” a very well received game. The download rate was skyrocketing and we were very proud of the hard work made. We spent a lot of time making and tweaking each level and we all were very happy with the work made by Lluis, our Lead Level Designer. But after all that hard work, if you are especially good with the game, you can burn the 80 levels of the game in less than 3 hours. There’s nothing wrong with that, but in a Free to Play mobile games world, where everybody is aiming to make games that last forever, 3 hours didn’t seem like a sustainable approach.

Uncertainty is in part a solution. Many games use it to generate infinite procedural levels. The player never plays twice the same level. But we still like the beauty of handmade level designs, so we tried a different approach. Basically, we twisted our ideas: what if we used cards to move and shoot? what if the movements that you can make were constrained by the available cards on your deck and their random order? How could this affect your next movement and the rest of the decision tree in a handmade level? How could this make each run feel fresh? How could this improve replayability?

We tried the core idea in a prototype and a new game concept was born. We called it CardCade. As you can see we are very original guys (especially naming things).

So, we had a weird prototype coming from a mashup idea in a shmup game. We take the mashup thing very seriously, so the next step was to mashup Star Wars with Easter Eggs...

Egg Ships?

In the first prototype, the most satisfying feeling came when you pierced enemy spaceships going through them in a powerful dash. To make it yet more satisfying, we thought that we could add a bunch of debris coming from the destroyed enemy spaceship. Floating in front of the camera. Slowly. And suddenly came the idea: Eggshells.

In Space Egg Ships you command the pilots of a rebel army fighting against a huge imperial army made entirely with eggshells.

The game

The result is an arcade game with a fast-paced strategy layer that makes it easy to learn, but with an extra depth that will keep the player engaged. More than 100 handmade levels (and we are working constantly in new content) and various game modes, including a Challenge mode to compete against friends.

In every run, the player has to find the best match for its movement and special cards and perform powerful and unstoppable combinations.

It also features RPG elements to improve the link between the player and its ships. The player can upgrade constantly its ship and cards to make every Egg Ship unique.

The player can also unlock 4 different pilots with their respective Egg Ships. Every one of them has unique abilities and unique movement cards. Replay a level with a different egg ship is especially rewarding!
